What to expect at your Neurodevelopmental appointment

Assessment: Who will they see and what will they do?

Some of the conditions that we are exploring with you and your children, can involve specialist assessments involving a number of professionals and/or services.

This may mean that you have to attend more than one appointment to complete your child's assessment.

Neurodevelopmental Conditions

You, your child, or other professionals may have questions about your child’s development, communication or behaviour. There are a number of conditions that might cause your child to behave in the way that they do. Please click on the links for more information about these conditions and what is needed to complete the assessments.

Autism Spectrum Disorder/Condition (ASD/C) is a lifelong, developmental condition that affects how a person communicates with and relates to other people, and how they experience the world around them. You can read more information about this here: What is Autism (from Ambitious About Autism).

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)is a behavioural condition characterised by symptoms of inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. You can read more information about this here: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

What are tics?
Tics are movements or sounds that you make without warning that you can only control to an extent.

Movement or motor tics can be simple, such as shoulder shrugs or touching things.

Complex movement tics affect more than one muscle group – for example if your arms and legs tense at the same time – or when several different tics happen together – such as twisting your body and slapping yourself.

Simple sound or vocal tics can include repeated sounds, such as throat clearing or making a specific noise.

Complex sound tics might involve making several sounds or sentences.
