Referral for Assessment

Questions

Why has my child been referred for a Neurodevelopmental assessment?

You may have questions about your child’s development, communication and behaviours. If your child attends school or nursery the staff they may also want to understand further why your child may have challenges or difficulties in these settings. Referral into a neurodevelopmental service will allow parents/carers and settings to explore, discuss these questions and provide support as required.

Speech Bubble
One of the next steps could be working with your child’s school, nursery or health visitor to complete a referral in the neurodevelopmental service. At this stage you will talk through the questions that you have and describe the behaviours that you would like to talk about with them.

What should I do while I am waiting for an appointment?

It can be frustrating while you are waiting for your appointment, not knowing where to turn to next. There are however a number of online resources and parent support groups that you can access while you are waiting.

Support and Resources are available here.

Rejection X

What happens if the referral is not accepted?

Sometimes a referral can be rejected because there is not enough information to make a decision about what type of assessment is required or this is not the correct service for the questions being asked. Do not worry. There are still services that you can access while a final decision is being made.
