What we do

The community paediatric audiology service provides hearing assessments and advice to children, families, schools, therapists and other professionals in Luton and Bedfordshire.

Community paediatric audiology provides a service for identifying temporary and permanent hearing impairment in children between the ages of 0-16 (or 19 if in special needs education) within Luton and Bedfordshire.

Staff work with other specialists and agencies to reduce the effects of hearing loss and contribute to educational, social and employment opportunities.

We carry out hearing assessments on children according to their age and ability, including ear examination and monitoring as below:

  • Targeted follow up from newborn hearing screening.
  • Monitoring children with syndromes and illnesses that predisposes them to having hearing problems
  • Joint assessment clinics for children with undiagnosed additional needs or for children exhibiting challenging behaviour
  • Hearing screening for children during their first year at school
  • Hearing assessments for children in special schools with complex needs (if no previous hearing assessments)
  • Hearing assessments as part of an integrated multi-disciplinary assessment
