Special Needs School Nursing Service

What we do

The special needs nursing team provides clinical care to children and young people with complex health needs or disabilities who attend special/mainstream schools/social care settings. In most of the schools, a member of the nursing team is generally on site on a daily basis. However, sometimes they are needed elsewhere and, at these times, there is telephone cover in case of an emergency.

This service is provided to children/young people in Luton schools or who have NHS Luton GPs. This includes;

  • Woodlands Secondary School.
  • Lady Zia Wernher School.
  • Chiltern Schools – Kingsland and Beech Road sites.
  • Richmond Hill Schools – East and West. (Nursing team not present on site)

The team provide a wide range of services including:

  • Writing and amending health care plans
  • Checking specific care plans – i.e. epilepsy, diabetes, anaphylaxis
  • Checking and administering medication.
  • Training staff to administer medication/feeds/Auto Injectors/Inhalers etc.
  • Referring to support services – i.e. continence, physiotherapy, occupational therapy.
  • Attending to unwell children at school.
  • Providing advice and information.
  • Liaising with local healthcare, social care and education services.

They are always happy to discuss a child’s medical needs with parents and to offer advice and support.

The team provides a service 39 weeks of the year (during term time) excluding bank holidays between 09.00 – 17.00 hrs Monday to Friday, although a small team is available during school holidays to answer queries.

Referrals are accepted from community/hospital paediatricians, health visitors, school nurses, education, social services, GPs, other health professionals and families.

The Special Needs Nursing Service, run by Luton Children and Adults Community Health Services, covers special needs schools in Luton and South Beds.
