Planning application - Princess of Wales car park design

We are improving car parking at the Princess of Wales hospital site

In 2021, Cambridgeshire Community Services NHS Trust on behalf of local NHS and social care partners, secured outline planning permission to redevelop and modernise the Princess of Wales hospital, including car parking on site to address the current lack of parking facilities.

As part of the preparation of a detailed planning application for a four-storey car park (270 car parking spaces and 108 cycle spaces), local engagement was undertaken in June to seek views on the external 'cladding' of the car park.

Leaflets presenting 3 options were delivered to houses around the hospital and display boards were set up in the hospital so that local residents, hospital users and staff could consider the 3 options for how the car park façade could look.  People were invited to submit comments either by completing a paper form or submitting comments via this website.

The purpose of the ‘cladding’ around the car park is partly to improve the visual appearance of the building and partly to contain the glare from car headlights, so options including vertical fins (option 1), horizontal fins (option 2) and perforated metal sheet (option 3) were proposed - click on the images below to see these options.

Thank you to everyone who responded during our engagement period. 53% of respondents favoured option 1 (vertical fins); 7% favoured option 2 (horizontal fins); and 32% favoured option 3 (perforated steel).  8% of respondents did not express a preference.

We are therefore progressing with Option 1 (vertical fins) as the basis for our planning application.  Other comments that were submitted as part of the engagement process are also being considered as the design progresses.

Thank you again for taking the time to contribute to our engagement process. We'll update this page as our planning application progresses, so please do revisit this site.

The staff are wonderful; the receptionists were polite and efficient, the nurses I have seen, were incredible.
