Shine a Light Award Winner - November 2013

by Kirstie Flack | Dec 04, 2013

This award is an opportunity for patients, families, visitors and Trust colleagues to say ‘thank you – you made a difference’ to a member of staff or a team for anything (however small!) that helped make their experience of our services better.

Shine a Light Award Winner – November 2013

The Special Care Baby Unit based at Hinchingbrooke Hospital, Huntingdon

The team was nominated by the mother of a baby boy who stayed on the ward.  The nomination reads as follows:

“I have never been so grateful to anyone than the staff on SCBU.  After a really good labour, my newborn son was taken to SCBU with low blood sugar and then to have photo therapy for his jaundice.

“The staff went out of their way to take super special care of all the babies on the ward.  Stephanie Jones and Alison Longhurst are two people that will stick extra in my mind as I really felt they loved the little ones they were caring for.

“Not only did the staff do such a good job looking after the babies and attending their every need, making sure they got the best treatment, but also the care they showed to me was outstanding. They cheered me up, made sure I was ok, and supported me in every area looking after my premature baby. Although I was so happy to go home I missed all the staff from SCBU and I’m sure my son does too.

“My husband would also like to add his gratitude to the staff as it was hard for him leaving me and his little boy in hospital whilst he had to work, and knowing the staff were taking care of us both put his mind at ease.”

Congratulations to the Special Care Baby Unit!

Other nominations included:

Clare Dean, Podiatrist, Podiatry Dept, Hinchingbrooke Hospital

Clare was commended for the wonderful treatment she gave to one of her patients.  For two years he was treated for an ulcer on his toe by another NHS Trust to no avail.  But Clare managed to get his toe to heal in six months!  She is patient, cheerful and kind and always goes above and beyond.  She always makes you feel like you are the most important person in the world.

Sharon Hughes, Administrator, Community Rehabilitation Peterborough

Sharon was nominated by her colleague, Diana Baird, for the huge difference she has made to the team by freeing up the clinicians from admin as much as she can. She has supported the team in developing new processes, going onto SystmOne and becoming more efficient. She is patient, supportive, friendly, understanding, hardworking and excellent at problem solving. She even organises leaving collections and presents for staff!

Louise Rogers, Day Therapy Team Manager, Day Therapy, Arthur Rank Hospice

Louise was nominated by her colleague Emma Hartley for constantly working above and beyond for her team and the service.   Despite being constantly busy, she always makes time for her staff, ensures they are all fine and helps to boost morale. She does not get the recognition she deserves for all her hard work, and Arthur Rank Hospice would not be as successful and enjoyable a work environment, if it were not for her efforts. A huge thank you to Louise, for being such a supportive Line Manager!

Maureen Burnham-Slipper, Former Sexual Health Nurse, Suffolk Sexual Health (now retired)

Maureen was commended by Donna Page, a colleague for an amazing 30 years at the Felixstowe Clinic as a Family Planning Nurse.  During the past year, they have lost count of the number of patients who have asked after her, explaining what a difference she made to their lives and recalling her kindness and caring attitude. Maureen is highly regarded by the people of Suffolk and is sorely missed by her patients and her former colleagues.

Infection Prevention and Control Team, Doddington Hospital

The team were nominated by the Doddington Outpatient department for their tireless efforts to support the Trust with any problem but especially the work done to provide us all with protection from Influenza every year. They come at your request whenever possible and are always happy to help!

Mandy Hill, Interim Clinical Service Manager, Ely & Fens Rapid Response Team, Doddington

Mandy was nominated by Mike Passfield, Head of Nursing for launching the Community Rapid Response service pilot with a smile!

The aim of the pilot is to ensure people who do not need to be admitted to hospital, but need support to be cared for at home are more quickly assessed and treated in the community.

Mandy has been a proactive member of the steering group, and has remained enthusiastic throughout the planning, launch and current pilot stages. She has taken on the operational management of the pilot project, alongside her current role as Fall Prevention Team Lead. Mandy continues to lead the small team of community matrons, who work closely with therapy and care staff to ensure this pilot is delivered and continues to be successful. Through out the day, despite the challenges Mandy remains upbeat and positive, leading the team with a smile. A pure asset to the team, community unit and the organisation .

Well done to everyone who was nominated this month.

The staff are wonderful; the receptionists were polite and efficient, the nurses I have seen, were incredible.
