Walking around hospital will prove to be good training for 50km walk

by Kirstie Flack | Aug 10, 2015

Integrated Discharge team at LutonEnergetic staff from the Integrated Discharge team at Luton have signed up to the 50km (31.7 miles) Thames Path walk to raise funds for the charity Motor Neurone Disease Association.

Calling themselves the Fast Trackers, the team from Cambridgeshire Community Services NHS Trust, based at the Luton and Dunstable Hospital, will undertake the challenge which starts at Runnymede and ends at Henley on 12 September this year.

Sally Shaw, team leader said: “None of us are fitness fanatics but we walk a lot around the hospital throughout our working day and are hoping it will stand us in good stead.

“The name Fast Trackers describes the bulk of the work we do such as completing Fast Track applications for the Department of Health NHS Continuing Healthcare (CHC); for patients with a rapidly deteriorating condition who require on-going care either in a care home or in their own homes, but we also hope it describes how we will walk on the day!”

As part of their work the nurses speak to many End of Life patients, some of whom have been diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease - a rapidly deteriorating and distressing life-limiting condition, impacting not only on the individual but also their families and friends.

Sally said: “The team feel passionately about raising funds for this very worthwhile cause.

“We would love your support and if you would like to donate any money please go to our just giving page (below) or contact us directly on 01582 497355.”

The staff are wonderful; the receptionists were polite and efficient, the nurses I have seen, were incredible.
