Fun activities for hands

There are lots of fun activities that your child can enjoy that encourages the development of their hand skills (fine motor skills). Along the way, by playing and using their hands, they will develop strength and dexterity, helping them to use tools such as scissors, cutlery or pencils and to be as functional as they can be.

What you can do to help

Hand skills are an important part of your child’s development allowing them to be independent with:

  • Playing
  • Eating
  • Looking after themselves (e.g. dressing, washing and cleaning their teeth)
  • Learning to draw, painting and using scissors
  • Using other more complex tools (e.g. Rulers, cooking equipment, gardening tools, DIY tools)

In the video below we have lots of ideas for you; showing how children can progress their hand skills using every day items you may have at home. Each of the activity ideas develops more than one skill during the same activity.

Please pause the video if you want to read the information and look at the pictures slowly.

Each of the skills in the video is explained in the list below. Please click on each phrase for further explanation. If your child finds this skill challenging please see the video for activity ideas.

Grasp and release

This term refers to being able to control when you pick up and let go of an object. Your child may begin by throwing away the object, often without even looking.  This is sometimes referred to as ‘casting’.   As they develop they will learn to control where these objects go as they are interested in where they land. This will enable them to develop their play skills and move towards independence with activities such as feeding themselves.
