NExT Director Scheme - Supporting Tomorrow's Non-Executives

Cambridgeshire Community Services NHS Trust is delighted to participate in the NExT Director scheme in collaboration with NHS Improvement to improve the diversity of our Board.

The aim of the NExT Director scheme is to help people from under-represented groups who have the skills and expertise necessary to make a real contribution to NHS to take that final step into the board room.  The scheme, which has been likened to a board apprenticeship, was successfully piloted by the NHS Trust Development Authority with eight Trusts in London supporting 11 NExT Directors from BAME communities.

To support this scheme, we will: host a NExT Director for a placement of 12 months.

  • provide the NExT Director with access to board and committee meetings and papers (including an opportunity to review and analyse meetings with board members) Allocate an experienced Non-Executive director mentor for the period of the placement who can provide their NExT Director with regular feedback and advice
  • Encourage the NExT Director to shadow key senior staff and meet staff and patients.
  • Enable the NExT Director to access training and networking opportunities available.
  • Cover the reasonable travel expenses of the NExT Director when attending board and committee meetings.
