For good oral health, children need:
- a diet without too much sugar
- Access to toothpaste or a regular source of caries- preventive fluoride
- to brush their teeth twice a day with a soft or medium toothbrush with adult help in the early years
- access to regular dental care to benefit from early diagnosis and treatment of dental disease when necessary.
Guidance for parents about when to start using a toothbrush in children, which toothbrush to choose and how best to clean your child’s teeth is available here.
Guidance for parents/ carers about what to do if your child bangs a tooth or knocks a tooth can be accessed here.
Please contact your local dentist about your child’s dental care. If your child has a diagnosis, complex needs or a genetic condition please discuss this with your local dentist, since they may want to consider onward referrals to a specialist paediatric or hospital dental service.
