Cancer and Palliative Care Service

Who can use the service?
Adults registered with a GP in Luton who have cancer or who have a progressive, incurable disease.  For patients who require the Palliative Care Support Workers or the Consultant in Palliative Medicine in South Beds, a GP in South Beds is required.

Service provided include:
Our Cancer and Palliative Care Services are part of an integrated model, working closely with Luton and Dunstable Hospital and across the South Bedfordshire area of NHS Bedfordshire.

The Service is mainly provided within the boundaries of Luton; however there are components of the service that are provided outside the Luton area (i.e. see Community Palliative Care Support Workers).

Our service focuses on two main clinical areas:

  • A Macmillan  community oncology clinical nurse specialist service that supports cancer patients with complex needs who are on a curative pathway, and provide access to psycho-social care within the community setting
  • A Macmillan palliative care service supported by a palliative care consultant, specialist palliative care clinical nurse specialists and palliative care support workers 

Both of the above services are supported by a consultant psychologist, family therapist and a welfare benefits advisor (where appropriate).

Referrals to this service can be made by: 

  • any health/ social care professional for patients, families and carers

Clinical care is delivered in conjunction with the Luton and Dunstable Hospital, Keech Hospice, GPs and other professionals:

  • in the patient’s own homes including care homes
  • community based clinics.
